Sulfur has been used on acne for a long time. It is mildly antibacterial and helps dry out and peel the surface of a pimple. Drying lotions combine it with calamine and zinc oxide (soothing, oil-absorbing powders) and often salicylic acid, in an alcohol base that evaporates fast.
